Capability and capacity
Investing in people, resources, and events to grow New Zealand’s capacity to deliver world-leading climate change research.
Supporting careers in agricultural GHG mitigation research
Agriculture is New Zealand’s largest export sector, worth nearly $50 billion to our economy annually. Over the past 100 years, our farmers have built a reputation as global innovators in farming, backed by an active and connected research community.
As farmers now face increasing pressure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, it is critical that we continue invest in and grow our research capacity. We must safeguard New Zealand’s reputation for excellence, and generate new, tested technologies to help farmers here and worldwide take action.
Students and early career researchers are vital for fostering a vibrant research sector. Supporting students and early career researchers helps institutions and research teams plan for succession, build capability and knowledge, provide career pathways in climate change science, and ultimately generate science that delivers tools into the hands of farmers.
We support:
-
PhD scholarships for students studying new methodologies to reduce agricultural greenhouse gas emissions. See more information here.
-
Students through undergraduate, Master’s and post-doctoral schemes.
-
Funding for students at Massey, Lincoln and Waikato universities to support research into agricultural greenhouse gas emissions.
-
The Pūhoro STEMM Academy via workshops, pastoral care, Pūhoro wānanga, and summer internships
Funding for students within international research projects is managed via the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases, with the support of Ag Emissions Centre funding.
Sponsorships and support
We provide discretionary financial support in the form of sponsorships and support to a range of initiatives, events and individuals that meet our capacity development criteria. Some examples include:
-
Funding the development and national rollout of a climate change resource kit for schools, facilitated by the House of Science.
-
Supporting a wide range of relevant science conferences and meetings, and the attendance of such forums by individual scientists.
